Before there was a word for «industrial agriculture», there was the garden.
In any Mediterranean civilisation that settled near water, the first piece of infrastructure in the home was not the granary, nor the market, nor the road: it was the garden behind the kitchen. Ten square metres, sometimes a hundred. Four vegetables, two trees, herbs, a grapevine. Enough for the family to eat through the year without the price of anything deciding on its behalf.
The family garden was not romanticism. It was the operating system of self-sufficiency. It worked for ten thousand years. We dismantled it in under fifty.
In 2018 we travelled across Andalusia and Morocco to see what had replaced it. We saw what is called the largest sea of plastic in the world: thirty thousand hectares of industrial greenhouse, visible from space, supplying northern Europe with tomatoes from November to April. On the ground: exhausted aquifers, depleted soil, ever more chemical fertiliser, migrant labour under conditions no European supermarket puts on its label. A tomato that reaches Hamburg in four days, perfect on the outside and empty within.
That is what the garden became once it was industrialised. It grew large, lost the family, lost the self-sufficiency, lost the flavour, and was left with nothing but the appearance.
Huertify is the system that returns the garden to where it belonged: behind the kitchen, ten metres from the plate.
Closed-loop, hydroponic, sized for homes, restaurants and small shops, using between 85% and 95% less water than growing in soil depending on system and crop, measured and published per unit.
Every company that hopes to endure answers a few questions: What do we believe in? Why do we exist? Why does what we do matter beyond the obvious?
Huertify was born to give the home and the small shop back a piece of infrastructure that was quietly taken from them: the ability to produce a real part of their own food. Not to «democratise agriculture.» Not to «revolutionise food.» To bring back the garden. With today's technology, and with the responsibility not to repeat the mistakes of the generation before.
We do not sell to industrial-agriculture operators. If the system grows, it grows by adding small units, not by scaling up a large one.
We do not make the plant's growth depend on a live app. The monitoring electronics are optional; the plant does not rely on them.
The only subscriptions we allow are consumables — nutrients, available from Huertify or from any equivalent qualified supplier, with formula and dosage published — and an optional service plan, Apple Care–style, cancellable and separate from the equipment's basic warranty.
Every unit ships with an open repair manual and named part suppliers. Every efficiency claim is published with the measurement and the method.
That within fifteen years a significant share of the vegetables and herbs eaten in homes and restaurants across Spain will have been grown less than ten metres from where they are served. That the Almería model will no longer be the only model possible.
We will work always remembering the difference between producing food and feeding people.
